I just bought my plane tickets and received an accommodation offer for next spring so I decided it's officially time to start a blog.
I'll be living in Kincaid's Court, flat 14. My address is listed as:
Flat 14 Room 1, 1 Kincaid's Court
Kincaid's Court, Edinburgh EH1 1JT
I'm not sure if that's the full mailing address but who knows. Kincaid's Court was my first choice. It's where most of the internationals live. If you look it up on google earth (google 1 Kincaid's Court and pick any of the options) you can see that it's right off of the main street and a quick walk to the academic buildings.
I also bought my plane tickets. I'll be leaving from Dulles at 6:55 pm on Friday, January 8 and arriving at 10:20 am on Saturday, January 9, with a 2 hour layover at Heathrow. I'll be returning to Dulles at 3 pm on Friday May 29 (leaving Edinburgh at 6:30 am the same day).
There are 4 other people going to Edinburgh from Wash U. I already sort of knew 2 of the people (I've had classes with them) and a 3rd is my friend's suitemate. I've met those 3 but not the 4th. We're planning a dinner or something together before we go home for winter break so hopefully that will work out.
I have no idea who I'll be living with next spring but at least one of the Wash U people is living in Kincaid's Court flat 12, so she'll be close. I don't know where the other 3 are living yet.
The classes that I'm taking are Metaphysics of the Mind (my last undergrad requirement), Scottish History Since 1914, and Scotland: Society and Politics. These classes are subject to change when I get there in January, but for now, that's what I'm taking. Here's my class schedule:
Tuesday:
10-10:50 Society and Politics
11:10-13:00 Metaphysics
15:00-15:50 History
Thursday:
10-10:50 Society and Politics
15:00-15:50 History
At least one of those classes will have a weekly tutorial as well, but I don't know when that will be. So Tuesdays will be pretty terrible but other than that it's an awesome schedule! 4 day weekends every week! I'll be traveling a lot....
Speaking of traveling, here's what I'm thinking for that. This is all dependent on how much money I have obviously, but here's my ideal travel schedule:
Long weekends in: Ireland, Spain, England, and traveling around Scotland
Spring Break (5 weeks long): Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Munich, Venice, Florence, Brussels, Bruges.
After Exams (or end of spring break): Norway
So yeah I think it's possible, but we'll see. Most people that go abroad in the spring go to those places.
I probably won't update this much before I leave in January but I just wanted to get it started with the basics. I'll try to update it as often as possible in the spring so you'll all know what's going on. I'm excited!
